Bret and Carolee's mini vacation...

We had a great mini vacation, Oct. 17-20 as a celebration of Bret's 69th. birthday. We took a boat to the end of Lake Chelan. You can only get there by boat, seaplane or hiking in about 5-6 days. The lake is long, narrow and beautiful. Stehekin Lodge was our destination. It was off season, very few visitors and at almost anytime of day you could hear a pin drop. We visited Rainbow Falls, Stehekin River, The Golden West Visitor Center, the old one room school house, and other sights of valley. There are no stores, service stations only a Post office, community center and new one room school. Stehekin is a valley beginning at the head of Lake Chelan and winding into the Cascade mountains to Cascade Pass...a community of households scattered over the lower nine miles of the valley...a way of life revolving around the seasons and valuing a simple lifestyle...a recreational area of national significance and notoriety, bustling with recreation-seekers in the summer. quietly snow-covered in the winter...a step back in time. We wish we could have stayed longer. The Lords creations are grand and beautiful.
