August found the flock (well, most of the flock. A few were missing we are sad to report) enjoying the Mavy Family Reunion at Leavitt Meadows in California. Leavitt's is the site of many early childhood memories. Grandparents. Aunts. Uncles. Super fun cousins. Breakfast by Grandma. Card games by Coleman lanterns. And yummy s'mores and overall silliness.
The mountains, river, lakes and wildlife something to behold. Perhaps the most amazing thing to see are the stars at night. . .I think you could see all the way to the milky way.
So what do we like about Leavitt? Have a look . . .
The breeze through the quaking aspen trees.
Deer in the early morning light. (A niece asked what was so great about this . . . after all there are deer in North Carolina. I didn't have an answer. They just seem more amazing because you are out there with them.)
Hours of horse riding fun, thanks to this place. Did you know that you can play hide-in-go-seek on horses? You can, I've done it. Of course after many years of not being on a horse, there were some sore backsides.
Awe, the outhouse. That's right folks, there are no bathrooms at this place. This is the original outhouse from our childhood. Many memories of hiking up there as a group to use the facilities before going to bed. The adults in the party took the opportunity to teach us about the stars, how to find the North Star and to assure us that nothing was going to get us.
Here is the inside. It is a two seater! While I don't recommend this type of togetherness as a daily habit. As a little kid this helped with the creepiness of the place. The toilet seats are new by the way. As kids it was just the wood.
Here is the creek that runs right through the campsite. Nice and chilly. A good place to keep watermelon cold, brush your teach and play until your feet are numb.
More reunion highlights to follow.
